For many living in West, Central and North Trinidad, A drive to Grande Riviere sounds like a lifetime away. Well known for the leather back turtles that grace its coastline every year to lay eggs, the small community had something else to offer earlier this month. It was a night when hundreds of people took the scenic drive up the winding east coast road to be part of the much talked about Fisherman fete. Jamaican reggae singers Sizzla Kalonji (Miguel Collins) and Vandorne Johnson, aka Terry 'The Outlaw' Ganzie performed before a mammoth audience.
And although the rain played hide and seek throughout the evening, it failed to put a damper on the event in any way. Backed by his local engineer, Vychalle ‘Kid’ Singh, Sizzla had the crowd in a frenzy from the moment he stepped on stage. Maintaining his strong views of the Bobo Ashanti Rastafarians belief, he sang his usual aggressive condemnations of slavery and inhumane acts.
Western Oppressors, Aznaldo, Words of Divine, Dry Cry, Woman I Need You and Taking Over were some of the popular hits that the prolific singer performed for his devoted listeners, amany of whom sang in unison with him. His performance was preceded by Terry Ganzie, who made a statement when he sang So Long and King of Kings.
The crowd screams for Sizzla Kalonji (Miguel Collins).
