Revue Opens in Arima on Friday
By: Trinidad Guardian

Sunday January 23,

Artistic director Michael Osuna says the Revue Tent is celebrating 49 years in the calypso business for 2011. And the grand 50th anniversary celebrations will take place in 2012. He made this comment days before the Revue Tent is officially launched at Arima Velodrome. The launch takes place on Friday at 7 pm. The Revue Tent is traditionally launched at Arima—the birthplace of the late Aldwyn Roberts, fondly known as Lord Kitchener.  Roberts left a legacy including Trouble in Arima, Sugar Bum Bum and Rainorama.

Osuna said, “Revue Tent has been the longest serving tent in the calypso business. We are 49 years this year, but we will have our 50th celebrations next year. It will be dedicated to the memories of pioneers like Jazzy Pantin, Sonny Woodley and Lord Kitchener. “This year calypso connoisseurs can expect songs about the last regime, critical commentaries and songs on the socio-economic aspect of life in T&T. “It will be entertaining and thought-provoking,” said Osuna. The media launch is expected to take place at the Dial in Arima on Thursday. The entire cast will be present for photos and autographs.  Stalwarts include Skatie, Chalkdust, Baron, Pink Panther, Yellows and Exposer. The newcomers include Bodyguard, Sean Daniel, Marlon Edwards and Tameika Darius. The more adventurous like veteran Edwin Ayoung will attempt to scale to the top. Ayoung has been with the Revue for the past 35 years.

Showtime

The Revue goes to Palms Club, San Fernando at 7 pm on Saturday. The majority of shows will take place at the Seamen and Waterfront Workers Trade Union hall (SWWTU), Wrightson Road, Port-of-Spain at 8 pm.
