Haitian ambassador and top recording artist, Wyclef Jean, last night took to Twitter to share his thoughts on his homeland, which was yesterday hit by two earthquakes and several after shocks.
The Grammy award winning former Fugees star urged friends and fans to pray for the people of Haiti as news broke that a powerful earthquake of 7.0 magnitude had rocked Haiti at around 4:53 p.m. Tuesday.
`People unite! Please Pray,` Jean wrote while urging Twitter followers to donate money to his Yele Haiti charity organization.
`Please text `Yele` to 501501 to donate $5 to YELE HAITI. Your money will help with relief efforts. They need our help... please help if you can,` he said.
Raymond Joseph, the U.S. ambassador to Haiti, called the quake `a catastrophe of major proportions.` He also appealed for aid for Haiti even as the Inter-American Development Bank said it would provide $200,000 in immediate emergency aid to help the already poor nation deal with the devastating earthquake.
The quake, reported to be the largest in 200 years, rocked the island, collapsing buildings and telecommunications towers and causing panic and chaos. U.S. officials reported bodies lying in the streets and an aid official described `total disaster and chaos.`
